In 2021, with the blessing of His Beatitude Onuphrius, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, a parish community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was established in Lisbon, dedicated to Saint Spyridon of Trimythous. The first Divine Liturgy was held on November 28, 2021, in the town of Vale do Carregado, a suburb of Lisbon. Archpriest Vitaliy Horzov, a member of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was appointed to lead the newly formed parish. Since July 2022, through an agreement with the Lisbon Patriarchate of the Roman Catholic Church, the community has been granted the use of one of the churches in central Lisbon for regular worship. This church has become a spiritual home for parishioners from all parts of Ukraine — from the West and the East, the North and the South. Most of the faithful are Ukrainians who moved to Portugal in the 2000s, but the parish has also embraced those who were forced to relocate following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Every service includes heartfelt prayers for the suffering Ukrainian people, for the defenders of Ukraine, and for all those who are working toward victory and a just peace for our homeland. The Parish of Saint Spyridon in Lisbon has become a place of spiritual unity, where every believer can find communion with God and mutual support from one another. The Divine Liturgy and participation in the Holy Sacraments unite our Lisbon Orthodox family into one Body of Christ, where each person is not merely a witness, but an active participant in the life of the parish.
